About CallTypes
CallTypes is a small site built around six calculators for the numbers that come up constantly in telecom and business communications: what a call costs, how long it really ran, how good a VoIP connection sounds, and how many agents a call center needs. Here’s a walk through what each one does and how it gets its numbers.
Pricing a call
Two tools handle the cost side of a call. The Call Cost Calculatortakes a call’s duration and a per-minute rate — VoIP, mobile, or landline — and adds an optional connection fee and tax to return the total charge and the effective per-minute cost. The International Call Cost Calculator does the same job for calls crossing borders: pick a destination zone’s per-minute rate or enter your own, and it will also compare two rates side by side so you can see which one is actually cheaper once the connection fee is factored in.
Measuring duration
Billing and real time aren’t always the same number. The Call Duration Calculator works out the exact elapsed time between a call’s start and end in hh:mm:ss, then applies whichever billing increment your provider uses — per-second, per-6-second, or per-minute rounding — so you can see the billed duration next to the raw one.
Judging VoIP quality
The Call Quality Score Calculator takes three measurements — latency, jitter, and packet loss — and runs them through a simplified version of the ITU-T G.107 E-model, the same family of math behind the industry’s MOS (Mean Opinion Score) ratings. The output is a score from 1.0 to 4.5 and a plain Poor/Fair/Good/Excellent label, so you don’t have to interpret the raw model yourself to know whether a connection is usable.
Sizing a call center
Two more tools share the same underlying math: Erlang C, the standard queuing model for call centers. The Call Wait Time Calculator takes call volume, average handle time, the interval, and your agent count, and returns the offered load, the probability a caller waits at all, the average speed of answer, and the resulting service level. Flip the question around and the Call Center Staffing Calculator takes call volume, handle time, interval, and a service-level target and works backward to the number of agents you need, along with the occupancy and average speed of answer that staffing level produces.
The museum
Alongside the calculators sits the Museum of Telecommunications, a set of galleries on the technologies, infrastructure, and people behind modern communications, with entries, images, and facts sourced from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. There’s also a blog and a growing set of learn guides for background reading between calculator sessions.
What this is, honestly
CallTypes is independent and supported by advertising — that’s what keeps the tools free and free of logins. It isn’t affiliated with the ITU, any standards body, carrier, PBX vendor, or telecom brand mentioned on the site. Every calculator here produces an estimate based on the numbers you enter and a documented formula; it is general informational content, not professional telecom-engineering, financial, or regulatory advice.
