The man, identified as 32-year-old Michael J. Smith, allegedly struck his wife’s car with his own vehicle, causing significant damage. The incident occurred on Sept. 5, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m. in Helena. According to court documents, Smith was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also allegedly driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic.

He also admitted to physically assaulting her, striking her in the face and body. This admission came after a lengthy period of domestic violence, during which Arnold had been accused of similar behavior. He had previously been arrested for domestic violence, and his history of violence was well-known to the police. The victim, a woman named Sarah, was a single mother who worked as a waitress. She was also a victim of sexual assault.
