911 call takers are trained to handle all types of emergencies, but they also have to deal with non-emergency calls that can be frustrating for them and the callers.

The High Volume of Non-Emergency Calls

D.C. 911 call takers receive hundreds of thousands of calls every year, with many of them not being emergencies at all. In fact, according to the D.C. Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, the majority of 911 calls in the District of Columbia are not related to emergencies.

“We can’t just be a 311 service for everything.”

The Problem of Non-Emergency Calls

The 911 system is designed to handle emergency situations, such as life-threatening injuries or crimes in progress. However, the system has become increasingly overwhelmed by non-emergency calls, which can be handled by other agencies, such as 311 or local police departments.

We had 12 officers on duty, and we had 12 dispatchers. We had a total of 24 people working on the emergency response system. We had a staffing shortage that was impacting our ability to respond to emergencies. We had a significant shortage of call takers, which was impacting our ability to answer 911 calls in a timely manner. We had a shortage of dispatchers, which was impacting our emergency response times. We had a shortage of officers, which was impacting our ability to respond to emergencies in a matter of minutes. We had a shortage of medical personnel, which was impacting our ability to provide medical care in emergency situations. We had a shortage of administrative personnel, which was impacting our ability to provide administrative support to our officers and dispatchers.
